Sandi Rosner –
This is a beautiful book. As a long time knitter, I was familiar with Kaffe’s work, but Erin’s paintings were new to me. What a delight to see two such talented artists bring their own point of view to common objects. It’s like eavesdropping on an artistic conversation.
Pat Regan –
Wonderful book , with beautiful images and heart warming family stories. Kaffe and Erins approach to Color and texture is so enlightening . The book is filled with their spectacular works illustrating their brilliant use of color both vibrant and subtle. Great gift for the holidays !

I LOVE and adore this book. I loved reading the history of Erin’s and Kaffe’s relationship, I loved how both artists composed and painted the same still lifes, and I love the finished paintings. I am taking a painting class now and we were told to bring in paintings that we love, and so of course I had to bring this book to the ZOOM class! Everyone oohed and ahhhed!
Anna Thornton –
This book is an absolute gem! The quality of the images and the book itself is superb. The colors are vibrant, the writing thoughtful. Every time I open this book I feel newly inspired to create! Thank you for sharing your artistic journey with the world!

Erin and Kaffe’s book Color Duets is fabulous. It is an inspiration for all to paint bravely and not take yourself too seriously. It has encouraged me to paint daily and boldly go where no color has gone before!!!
Myra Klahr –
I give this book top rating. Beautiful photos and a fascinating narrative. I was thrilled to send a copy to a friend.
Makes me want to paint with Erin and Kaffe
MaryAnn Leffel –
I love this book. It embodies and combines the spirit and love of Big Sur with the amazing talent and artistry of two fabulous individuals. Kaffe and Erin have combined their genius and produced a book you will return to again and again.
Martie Moreno –
I have been a fan of Kaffe Fassett’s work for many decades and only recently, through social media, found Erin. Her art speaks to me in ways I can’t put into words. When I found out this book was being published, I pounced on the chance to order it. The day it arrived, as I did with her heartfelt book Drinking from a Cold Spring, I dropped all else and read it from cover to cover, fascinated by their stories and completely captivated by their artwork. If you are an aspiring artist, a lover of art or someone who just loves the treat of looking into the processes and thoughts of talented people, this book is for you.

Personal testimony…I keep the book on my coffee table and when the woes of this year via news or climate….I open it up and take in a deep breathe. The book makes me remember that beauty gives us breathe. I can breathe deeper because of the beauty of this work. Kaffe and his niece Erin have given us a gift of sheer beauty, delight and inspiration. We needed this for this Time!

This is gorgeous book that tells a beautiful story anyone who loves art and Big Sur should have. It’s a joy to read and a piece of art in and of itself.
Linda Myers –
Color Duets is a beautifully curated collection of the gorgeous artwork of Kaffe Fassett and his niece, Erin Lee Gafill. It’s a visual feast of colors and pattern, and I love seeing their still life paintings from two different perspectives and art backgrounds. I’m thrilled to add it to my collection of books that began with Glorious Knits in the early 1980s.
Melinda Hirsch –
Wonderful book with great understanding and clarity of both artists and their relationship over many years. A great read with beautiful photos. I highly recommend! A perfect gift, too…
Laurie Smith –
Love everything about this book…it has some of my favorite works all in one place and I can lose myself just in the photographs and learning techniques they use….what I especially appreciate (and employ) is the way both Kaffe and Erin empower me to make my own choices in color and styles…..
Kate Birmingham –
Color Duets is a feast for the eyes. It is filled with artwork in glorious colors by Kaffe Fassett and Erin Gafill. When I first received this book I turned the pages slowly cover to cover taking in each spectacular photograph. When I was finished I did it again. Next, I went through and read each of the inspirational quotes. Last I read the text and was fascinated to read about Kaffe and Erin’s shared family history and their shared artistic visions which have led to creating so much beautiful art and such a beautiful book. I could not recommend this book more highly.
Teri Johnson –
I really enjoyed this book. It is the type of book I can savor a bit at a time . I gave 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wish the photos had written descriptions on the pages they appear on. You have to keep going back to the credit page in the back to see the descriptions. Beautiful work from 2 intriguing artists. I enjoyed the family history. Get it in hardcopy.
Juli S –
What a wonderful inspiration! I am a weaver, and found the colors in this book so delicious that I took them to the loom. I can highly recommend this book to any artist in any medium for a fresh look at color.
Juliann –
I bought this for a friend who is a portrait painter, knitter, weaver, spinner, and general putzer arounder. When it arrived, I read through the book first to make sure it was something she would like. I was enthralled with the quality of the print and the paintings. I am a Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mabley fan and I loved reading the stories and seeing the thoughts behind the paintings. I love the relation between Kaffe, his sister and his niece. Thank you for another successful Kaffe book. It is beautiful in word and sight. I recommend it to everyone!
MaryAnn Leffel –
I love this book. The easy collaboration of skills and talents, with the anecdotes makes this a book I’ll return to many times. The blend of Big Sur, colors and companionship make it a joy to read.
Joetta Keene –
Anyone who loves colors will love this book. Anyone who loves textiles will love this book. Anyone who loves art will love this book. It’s rare that we get an inside look into the creative process of an artist but here we get to pull up a chair and are invited to learn with them. Highly recommend.
Sherry –
What a beautiful book!
There’s page after page of the most exquisitely colorful paintings from these two respected and talented artists, each offering their version of a shared vignette with color being the common thread of both works. It is also nice to be offered a glimpse into the shared family history. It seems art runs in their DNA.
This has been my ‘go to’ book when I need to escape the California smokey gloom of this season. Color Duets is truly a visual delight and balm for the spirit.
Adrian Hovard –
I have known Erins work for a long time. Receiving this book in the mail actually brought tears to my eyes. To see these two amazing talents working side by side and working their individual magic is a gift. Their stories make you feel as if you a part of their creativity. I have since given a number of copies as gifts and it is always well received.
Susan Tousey-Murray –
Lovely! Colours, shapes, textures, family connections, Big Sur lore — a continuing tradition of inspiring us to dig deep and do art that is personal and satisfying. Thank you, Kaffe and Erin; my life is richer with you as two of my muses.
Kathryn Hannay –
Color Duets is a treasure for anyone interested in painting, textiles, and the creative process. These talented artists have shared their passion by painting with each other for a week each year for the past ten years. Each page is filled with colorful inspiration, family photographs and stories about Big Sur. Color Duets is a joy and a pleasure to read each and every time I sit down with my copy.
barbara –
Color Duets is a show stopper! I was fascinated to see how the two painters interpreted the subjects. Having only met Kaffe through photos with his bold, colorful quilts, sweaters, textiles, and now his paintings and book, I was surprised that he began painting with white. Both artists are an inspiration. I love the way he and Erin teach other, and in turn Erin teaches us. She is always reaching out and helping others enjoy painting and writing. This is truly a joyful book from two joyful people.
Helen Birdsong –
I very recently brought this book as a gift for my sister and husband. They actually had their wedding breakfast at Nepenthe some years ago. I thought it would be a lovely gift for them and was not disappointed. They love all of it, the history the pictures and have said they have even in this virus confining times shown it to many friends. The leave it open in the bay window of their cottage, in the small village they live in for friends to see. A sign saying where we had our wedding breakfast. I obviously looked at it before mailing it to the UK and nearly did not. Gift well chosen, will not disappoint.
Elizabeth Banks –
What a feast for the eyes — a true symphony of color. I loved the family history, the paintings made side by side and the intimacy of their work. This book is like opening a treasure chest.
Andrea Reh-Gingerich –
I discovered this family of artists through Romney Steele’s cookbook “My Nepenthe”. And fell down the rabbit hole.
I also bought Kaffe’s book “Dreaming in Color” some years ago, because I dabble in knitting. And then discovered Erin’s beautiful paintings. I am really drawn to all the wonderful colors, and the subjects of their paintings. It is wonderful to see how similar and yet different their styles are. The family stories and their love for each other are so sweet. A treasure to read! Thank you!
Anne Wheelis –
Years ago when I lost the time for creative sewing and needlework I still read all the magazines and marveled at Kaffe’s tapestry designs. Then, five years ago Erin was donating the sale of one of her prints to earthquake relief in Nepal. I love our golden hills and green oaks, so I bought Santa Lucia Mountains, East of Ventana. I think it was then that I started following Erin on FB, and imagine my surprise when I learned that she and Kaffe are related!
Color Duets is a joy. I come from a family of artists, so I relate to the family story. I find myself looking at my home and my collections wondering how to set up a still life. I look at my uncle’s paintings and my father’s drawings and my sister’s art and my friend’s quilts and go back to Color Duets again to read about starting. And learning. And starting over and learning more. And looking forward to meeting both in 2021 at the Monterey Museum of Art.
Now I have some paints and brushes and canvas and an easel and am arranging vases in my mind. First I have to finish the masks I’m making with Kaffe’s fabrics!

This book is a fabulous addition to any art library. Prepare to be enchanted by the story of two remarkable artists and their journey through decades of art, family, and inspiration, including delightful side by side interpretations of delicious color. Beautifully written and photographed, this book will not simply reside on the shelf; it will be out at all times for all to enjoy.
Paul Rickard –
Duets by Erin Lee Gafill and Kaffe Fassett is a collaborative effort that tells the story of family and friendship and unrelenting devotion to art. The pages unfold with inspiring images of patchworks of color and light that read with joy and master craft. Erin and Kaffe’s story is now chronicled in the finest tradition of California Art.
Nancy Rickard –
As an artist and a yarn and cloth enthusiast, I loved every part of this book by Kaffe Fassett and Erin Lee Gafill. Their love of color has been my inspiration, and will be the inspiration of a generation. I loved the weaving of yarn and texture with light and color. This family story is heart-warming and inspiring.
Judith Baker Montano –
What a glorious book filled with amazing art and beauty. The minute it arrived in the mail, I sat down to pour over each page. I have known Kaffe and Erin for many years and have always admired their extraordinary talents. This book should be in every library!
John Birmingham –
What a beautiful book! I love the way “Color Duets” combines the romance of Big Sur and a shared family history with the work of two remarkable artists.
Cindy Mori –
Honestly, I have found this book to be a wonderful lift especially during this time. When I opened the box and felt the cover and saw the colors my heart was filled with energy and hope and excitement to see what is next. The creativity and love of color and the loving relationship between Kaffe and Erin was a celebration of all of what is…life. Finding the joy and honoring the time to create together and then sharing it with us…is a special gift. One you will want.
